Understanding Limited Edition Fine Art Prints

In photography an edition is the total number of prints that will be made from a digital file. An open edition has no limit on how many can be printed, whereas a limited edition is restricted in number so that each piece will retain or increase in value over the years. The idea is that scarcity increases demand and, therefore, creates lasting value. By this logic, smaller editions are scarcer and are in higher demand, which increases value.

Limited Edition Fine Art Prints

First Print

I restrict all my editions to a total of 50. Each has an embedded digital signature and edition number in the form of 3/50 or 40/50 etc. As the edition gets closer to selling out the print price may increase as scarcity demands it. I withhold the first print of an edition to keep for myself. After the edition sells out I may choose to sell 1/100 to the right collector. Once an edition sells out it is retired and will never be printed again. A signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity is included with the purchase and is shipped to you separately. This certificate guarantees the provenance, or origin, of the artwork.

If the print is 12 x 18 or smaller the print is not counted as part of the edition. I do this so people who have limited means can enjoy the art as well. I’ve had a gallery for years and the look on the children’s faces when they get a $20 print is something I really enjoy and don’t want to lose.

Artist’s Proof

In addition to the first print I also create what is known as an artist’s proof. This image is carefully selected by me and is signed and numbered with AP#1. This piece comes with a letter containing my thoughts about the image and a personal dedication to the collector. If you’re in the area it also includes a photo of you, myself and the artwork.
