First Ski Descent of Mt. Vsevidov in the Aleutian Islands

Mount Vsevidov, the object of our longing. The right hand skyline was our descent route. The adventure was not in the technical difficulty of the ski but in the absolute remoteness of the mountain.

The Aleutian Islands. To the north is the Bering Sea and to the south is the North Pacific Ocean.

Our transportation for the 15-hour trip from Dutch Harbor to Umnak Island.

After 15 hours of motoring we come ashore on Umnak Island. Here we’re using PVC pipe to roll our skiff to a spot above the tide line.

Captain Jimmer sails away. He’ll be back in two weeks….weather permitting. Yikes.

Our beautiful basecamp beneath Mt. Rechesnoy.

After a week of waiting for the drizzle to stop and the skies to clear, the climb begins.

High camp is the flat green spot just ahead.

The Bering Sea off in the distance.

Suzy Sutphin and myself on the summit.

Suzy is a good skier.

Perfect corn snow

Back on the beach and time to celebrate

Happy kids back in The Elbow Room bar in Dutch Harbor.
