In Search of the Sublime

Mount Cho Oyu

High on Mount Cho Oyu

Morning at 26,000 Feet in Tibet

I’ve spent most of my life in pursuit of the sublime and beautiful as an alternative to the troubles of my life. That quest has followed a number of directions but has always taken place in nature. Exploring in the mountains has been the greatest joy of my life and it has taken me to some of the furthest reaches on the planet; as far away as the Aleutian Islands in the Bering Sea and as high as some of the highest peaks on earth. Mountaineering has always been a spiritual journey; leaving the troubling and mundane world of the lower elevations behind and ascending slowly, quietly and with purpose into a realm that is pure and unambiguous because of its elemental beauty and dispassionate nature. The mountains don’t care if you live or die, they just are what they are. This clears the mind and opens one to experiences unavailable in the lower realms. Mountaineering is a discipline that clears the mind. Once one is clear and open, joy becomes easily available and can be sparked by many things; an intensely saturated alpenglow painting the mountains pink and orange, the roar of avalanches peeling off a hanging glacier and falling into the valley below, or the wonderful softness of lush grasses on one’s feet after a long hard day of hiking. It is these elemental experiences that have inspired my photography and I strive to embed them in my images so that you too may feel the joy.
