Artist’s Statement
Photography is genetic in my family. Both my great-great grandfather and great grandfather were photographers living on the edge of the American frontier. They photographed many of the pioneers heading west and left behind over 10,000 glass plate negatives that currently reside in the Smithsonian Museum. Both my grandfather and father were enthusiastic amateurs.
For my ancestors, photography was about recording the lives of people, but for me, it’s about the natural world and exploration. I came to photography not from art school but from adventuring.
I’ve been mountaineering in many of the world’s highest ranges including expeditions to the Himalaya of Tibet, Nepal, and Pakistan. I’ve made numerous climbing and skiing expeditions to Alaska including in the far away Aleutian Islands out in the Bering Sea. The desire to capture and communicate the power of what I’ve experienced provided the impetus for becoming a photographer.
Photography takes me to stunning locations. I photograph in-order-to be awed by nature and to share the beautiful moments experienced on the photographic quest. My work has been published by National Geographic, Nikon, People Magazine, Patagonia, Outside Magazine, Men's Journal, Powder, Skiing, Ski, Backpacker, and hundreds more editorial and commercial publications
I strive every day to become a master of photographic technique and digital developing. I relentlessly pursue stunning detail, extraordinary composition, and amazing color. I hope that my photos evoke an experience of almost other-worldly beauty and power. Nature occasionally graces the questing photographer with those rare moments.
